Using CarPlay shows inconsistent location

We’re in a hire car for the next two weeks having collected it from the airport a couple of days ago.

It’s an MG which has CarPlay built-in. However, when we try to use CarPlay on the screen, we find that our location veers off the road & goes all over the map.

We’ve never experienced this before in our own cars, and it does not happen when we unplug the phone from CarPlay and the passenger uses the phone Maps independently. The same issue happens in Apple Maps & Google Maps.

Anyone know of a fix for this – what is it about plugging the iPhone in and using CarPlay which makes the maps system so unreliable.
