How to stream old movies to Apple TV without a subscription?

I have loads of old TV series and movies saved from the 80s. I would like to know. Is it possible to transfer them from my computer to my Apple TV so I can watch them on my Samsung TV the file format for the TV series and movies is MP3's and MOV. I don't have an Apple TV account subscription and the media was never purchased via any streaming services

Thanks

Probably possible through Apple Home Sharing. What type of computer? What OS version? If you add compatible media files to the iTunes application (PC or older Mac) (or to modern Mac Apple TV app or Mac Apple Music app, then the Apple TV box can access those media files through the Computers app. The Computers app on the Apple TV box will try to access a Library of media files on a local networked computer, on which Home Sharing service has been activated. The Computers app has tabs for movies, tv shows, music, home videos, photos, and audiobooks. When videos are not specifically tagged as e.g. movies or tv shows, then those video files will be considered home videos.

MP3 files are audio files (not video), and would be compatible.

MOV files can have various types of video (codecs) in it, so that may or may not be compatible. Incompatible files may need conversion before being shareable this way.

MOV files that have H.264 AVC video and AAC audio are compatible.

MOV files that have H.264 AVC video and AC-3 audio are compatible.

MOV files that have MPEG-4 Part 2 video might be compatible with the ‘legacy’ models Apple TV box (A1469 or earlier), but not with the modern models Apple TV box (A1625 or later).

MOV files that have different video and audio codecs are probably not compatible.

Video files benefit from being properly interleaved (short alternating segments of each stream, to make streaming easier with less in-file seeking) and optimized (metadata at the start of the file). That would be a task for the video encoder or a post-processing tool.

An Apple TV+ subscription or Apple media Store purchase or other commercial streaming service isn’t needed for the above.

An Apple Account is needed for using the Apple TV box, as well as for activating Home Sharing. The Apple Account for Home Sharing should match between the sharing library on the computer and the Home Sharing service on the Apple TV box.

HandBrake is an excellent tool for video conversions to .mp4.

From the Presets, I would choose Devices﹥Apple 1080p30 Surround (assuming the source is 1080p or less), and tweak that a bit.

In the Summary tab, I would select ☑ Web Optimized for any video that will be played over a network.

It defaults to 30 fps video, which I would change to Same as source. It defaults to Peak Framerate or Variable Framerate, which I would change to Constant Framerate, unless I knew that the source wasn’t constant.

It defaults to both an AAC and AC3 audio track, but one of those is enough. So you can set one of the tracks to None.

One could save that as a new custom preset.

I was using PLEX for several years and it worked well but the last 10 months its been playing up, Library not updating unless I restart my iMac and restarting my FETCH box couple time a week and when I logged back into PLEX it always said something like another user is using the same account. I got in such a mess with it. I deleted it from my Mac computer. Reinstalled it a couple of times didn't make any difference. I contacted Plex Support and on some user groups but really didn't get any help so that's why I'm looking at an alternative, hoping that Apple TV can do the job. I've deleted my Plex account, have to wait for the four weeks to roll over and then I'll reinstall it but I'm not expecting any miracles.

Cheers

Hello Urquhart1244

Thanks for your detailed reply.

I have the M4 and running Ver 15.5

The AppleTV is a A1469

I managed to stream all of my music and pictures but no luck with movies or TV series, the appleTV is a vintage model but should still stream my movies but when I drag and drop movies in my iTunes / TV and Movie folder it just doesn't take them, its empty, I'm assuming that's how I should add them.

Might have to give PLEX a 4th try in 3 weeks time when I can download and activate again. Will also have a look at Infuse.app, gets great reviews but will have to try it on a AppleTV 4K.

Shame I was just hopping I could just directly stream my contend directly to my FETCH box / AppleTV.

Thanks for you help

When videos are not specifically tagged as e.g. ‘movies’ or ‘tv shows’, then those video files will be considered ‘home videos’. Look for your content under that tab (both on Mac and on Apple TV).

Great it works!

I was trying to add the content to my apple / music.app was that or is that iTunes and note the appleTV.app didn't know there was one until I copied you notes into chatGPT and it was fully explained to me in detail.

I dropped lots of movies and TV series into the TV.app and they all populated into the home video folder and they can all playback on my Samsung TV. Prior to contacting this discussion group I contacted AppleCare and was told it's impossible to play back movies & tv series on AppleTV without prior purchasing it from them?

One of my .avi files didn't transfer over, I know you said earlier the correct format to decode the files but can you tell me witch actual file to use seems to be quit a lot, I'm will be using HandBreak.

I down loaded the free trial of Infuse.app to make things more simple but the free version isn't free. Ill just play around do the transferring and setup manually for now.

Cheers

Colin
