iMac gmail stopped sending or receiving emails since password change

iPhone did same - managed to fix by adding something (mail server?) ph suggested. iMac not giving prompts & nothing happens when I click the ~ icon on mail. I'm not tech savvy AT ALL and no idea how to retrace my steps in fixing the iPhone. Have clicked on everything I can find but nothing has helped. Would really appreciate some help. Thank you
