What causes password errors in Numbers even after copying from Notes?

How can my password be wrong when I created the password in Notes and pasted it into Numbers Password setting to set it up for the first time AND have been able to open the file a few times yesterday -- until today -- using the same Notes password copied and pasted into Numbers??
