How do I stop 'waremis' pop-ups about viruses on my Mac every 5 minute?

If these scam messages are briefly popping up in the upper-right-hand corner of the screen, that would suggest they are being delivered as Web notifications: a "feature" of modern Web standards much abused by spammers and scammers.

FYI those instructions now include all popular browsers, but if you know of others I will research and add them.
