Concerns about privacy and ChatGPT

just Curious other people’s experience with ChatGPT. I use it fairly often to search info and find the results much better than Google or Safari. But I had an occasion where the result it gave me was so specific to a certain fact in my life that it startled me. I have all privacy settings on and the microphone is off. Does anyone know what kind of security/encryption is or isn’t used on this feature?

Are you talking about using ChatGPT through Apple Intelligence? That's the only way Apple would have anything to do with it.

You can read about privacy considerations here:

Use ChatGPT with Apple Intelligence on iPhone - Apple Support

Note that Apple doesn't have a search engine. So, if you're using Safari to search, you're using some other search engine like Google or Bing or DuckDuckGo.

Using an LLM AI for searching is something you should approach very carefully. Depending on your prompt, you can get some wildly inaccurate results. When ChatGPT can't find an answer, in its goal to "please" you, it will make things up. If it gives you any links or citations, check them yourself. Especially if you're submitting something to a judge or to Congress.

Don't worry about being extra careful. Our lives are an open book on the internet and our personal data is everywhere. And unfortunately there’s nothing we can do about it. Data breaches are almost a daily occurrence now with companies that are supposed to keep our data safe. There have been data breaches in hospital systems that contain our health data. The dark web has our drivers licenses, our social security numbers, passwords, credit card credentials.

All we can do is realize we are little fish in a giant shoal of billions surrounded by barracuda and hope we don’t get eaten. A sad fact of life these days.
