Retailer can’t refund to the Apple Card due to a mismatched receipt number

I made a small purchase at Home Depot using my Apple Card. Turned out I didn't need the hardware, and I returned it to the store location, with my receipt in hand. Home Depot happily accepted the return but could not issue a refund to my Apple Card, because the card number on the receipt, didn't match my actual card number. I believe this is a security feature of using the Apple Card.

Since it was a small purchase, Home Depot issued a cash refund, but had this been a large (i.e. appliance) purchase, I wonder what they would have done.

Has anyone else seen the circumstance where a retailer could not issue a refund to an Apple Card charge because the card number on the receipt was not the same as your card?

Thanks for that clarification.

FYI, going forward, if a merchant ever asks for the “last 4” of the card used for an ApplePay, AppleCard “Tap to Pay” transaction, this is ALSO listed in your wallet.

Within your Apple Wallet, select your AppleCard, then More (3 dots) -> Account Details -> Card Information -> Additional Card Numbers

The 4x digits are listed alongside “Apple Pay”

I have made several refunds at Home Depot using my Apple Card and it has never been an issue. It is not clear if you are using the physical Apple Card or Virtual Apple Card. In my area, Home Depot does not accept Apple Pay to use the Virtual Apple Card so I use the physical Apple Card, but I hear they are rolling it out so not sure if that is what you were able to use.

For me, the refunds automatically went back to the card after they scanned my receipt and they never even asked me for any card information. I am aware that some retailers will ask for the last 4 digits of your card number used for verification and you can find that number on your phone. Go to your Wallet app and tap on your Apple Card. Tap the icon on top showing a card and numbers, scroll down and tap "Additional Card Numbers". If used the physical card, the last four are listed under Titanium Card, and when using the Virtual Card, the last 4 are under Apple Pay.

Thank you for the responses. To clarify, I used ApplePay on my iPhone, with my AppleCard account, so the retailer never saw the physical card. My Home Depot was able to process the ApplePay sale without the physical card. Home Depot had no problem okaying the refund, but since I didn't use the physical card, they couldn't find the correct last four digits to issue the refund. In this instance it was no big deal, they issued a cash refund, but this leaves me a little leery of using the iPhone/ApplePay/AppleCard combination on a large purchase.
