"Whoosh" stopped working on new iMac

since yesterday, no "whoosh" when sending emails. This is a 2024 iMac and Sequoia 15.5. Audio is working, otherwise. No new software or hardware. Alerts are on. I have tried toggling the alert sounds in mail setting on and off but no change. I tried signing in as another user and it works normally. Any suggestions?
