Can failed ambient light sensor restart the MacBook many times?

I would not expect it to cause any problems with a normal sensor failure, but if the failure is caused by accidental liquid damage.....then yes, it can cause boot problems because there is probably more liquid damage than to just that sensor.

Which Macbook? They were made from 2006 through 2019 in a number of variants. Different variants require different troubleshooting steps.
