LG 5K Ultra K not display but charging working

Hello, today all of a sudden my LG 5K UltraFine monitor stopped displaying any image, however I can see it connected to my computer. I have multiple Macs in my family, for example I have a:

-- Mac 14 Pro M4 2024 with the latest software MacOS Sequioa Version 15.5 (24F74)

-- Mac 16 Pro M1 2021 MacOS Sequioa Version 15.5

-- Mac 15 Pro 2019 macOS 13 - Ventura

I was able to test with all of the above. Initially, I thought it was a cable causing the issue, and he changed multiple Thunderbolt cables that I have laying around. After testing, what I noticed is that it could be connected again, not display it's actually displayed because the screen is still black, but I can see the Mac being charged depending on the cable that I change. Sometimes it's not charging, but it's still providing power to the device.

But then I was able to isolate the issue, and it turns out that it's actually not the cable what's causing the issue but more the Mac OS. For example, a few days ago it was working fine on my M1 and M4 MacBook Pros but then all of a sudden stopped working. When I decided to test with my Mac MacBook Pro 2019 still running on Mac OS 13, what I noticed is that it actually working fine image is displayed and device is charged. This seems to be more likely an OS issue after an update.

I still can't connect my newer devices, but I know for a fact that it's related to an OS now. Also, since it was working fine with the MacBook Pro 2019, I was able to update that with the LG software, however, that did not fix any of the issues for the new devices.

Hopefully this is helpful for someone, and hopefully we can find a solution soon. As I can see, these LG 5K Ultrafine monitors seem to be having Thunderbolt issues often after macOS updates

No lock in here, I actually bought the official Apple Cables, I bought the Thunderbolt 5 pro, Thunderbolt 4 pro, and I also got the Thunderbolt 3. I also got some off-brand cables, and it's weird, like it partially works with my two computers running the latest macOS, but when I plug it in, it lost the signal.

It still works fine with the old computer, so no, no luck, definitely this is a software glitch more than a hardware glitch.

For displays above 4K, you need more than USB-C cables and the speed that comes from them.

These genuine ThunderBolt cables are limited to 0.5 meters maximum, for error-free connection to a higher-than-4K display. On a modern Mac, any errors can cause the display to drop out.

ThunderBolt 5 cables are not substantially different, and can only provide higher speeds when ALL devices are actual ThunderBolt-5 devices. When used with ThunderBolt 3, or 4 equipment, Thunderbolt-5 cables act as the older versions -- not better in any way -- and NOT exempt from 0.5 meter maximum length.

The only exception to the 0.5 meter length requirement is for ACTIVE ThunderBolt cables. These tend to cost more than US$129 each, because they contain either strong signal re-drivers, or convert to fiber-optic and back, or Both.

The 0.5 meter thunderbolt cable should work.

The Mac does not rely on Windows-like side-loaded "Drivers" which are actually packages of resolutions and settings for a specific display. Instead, it goes straight to the immutable source -- it asks the display itself.

To get a Mac display to become active, you need the Mac to query the display, and the display to answer with its name and capabilities. Otherwise, the display will not be shown as present, and no data will be sent to the display. "No signal detected" is generated by the DISPLAY, not by the Mac.

This query is only sent at certain times:

• at startup

• at wake from sleep — so momentarily sleeping and waking your Mac may work

• at insertion of the Mac-end of the display-cable, provided everything on that cable is ready-to-go

• hold the Option key while you click on the (Detect Display) button that will appear in Displays preferences (from another display)

so try doing some of those things and see if the display comes alive.

as a last resort, For MacOS 12 Monetary and some later versions, some users got relief by deleting some preferences files, then Restarting:

Library/Preferences/com.apple.windowserver

~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.windowserver.<UUID>.plist -OR-

~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.windowserver.<UUID>.plist

-- where [~] tilde is an active abbreviation for "current user"

-- and <UUID> is a string of hexadecimal numbers unique to your system, grouped as 8-4-4-4-8 hexadecimal digits

Restart REQUIRED after these deletions.
