how do I change the recurring events on the calendar to stop. I tried editing to “none” and it still goes back to recurring status!

Are you syncing the calendar from Google or Outlook? In that case the change is not being reflected on those servers and you will need to make the change by logging into the website of that account to change the calendar event.
