Messages on Mac (Sequoia 15.5) correct word selection in spellcheck not working

I recently did a clean install of my Mac and started a fresh user account. My messages app will not allow me to select and replace the correct word when it detects a misspelled word. All other apps are unaffected, this is only happening in messages, which makes me think this is a bug. I have deleted the relevant plist files, booted in safe mode (where the problem persists) and logged out and logged back into iCloud.
