So you have booted to Local Recovery mode and are trying to erase the internal device, right?

If you can still boot to the internal disk, prepare a bootable USB macOS installer, then boot to that and use its Disk Utility to erase the whole internal device. I prefer this because then I have a bootable disk available before nuking the internal device.

Or if your old Mac supports Internet Recovery, boot to it via Option-Command-R and use its Disk Utility to erase the whole internal device.

The cold truth is this MacBook is seventeen (!) years old and well obsolete.

In fact it was classified by Apple as obsolete about ten years ago.

If that is the original hard drive inside then it may very well be failing or failed.

Don't waste any time or money on that obsolete tech. Recycle it. If you feel so inclined you can remove the internal drive and destroy it with a hammer before sending the computer to the recycler.
