mail search results displaying in inbox

Whenever I search for emails in the iOS email app, the displayed search results are left in my inbox. Let’s say I have 2 emails in my inbox. When I search for a specific term, returning 8 email search results and I tap “Cancel” to go back to my inbox, the original mails (2) are there with listed underneath the 8 search result emails. Has anyone else noticed this?
