Cannot stop Spell Checker in Apple Mail

I've seen another post here saying that the OP has not been able to stop the SPell Checker in mid-check and Send the email. But that person was able to shut down Spell Checker by clicking on the red X. I have the same issue but cannot shut it down because the red X is grayed out. Even if I hit the Ignore button repeatedly. NOthing seems to help. Has anyone solved this?

I am running 15.5.

Thanks.

Mac Studio, macOS 15.5

".... stop the SPell Checker in mid-check and Send the email."

" cannot shut it down because the red X is grayed out. ...."

You might want to side-step the problem, and set the spell-checker to do it's work "as you type"

... or stop using it altogether ... instead of when you send.

In the Mail App:

Try Settings > Composing > Check spelling : You can choose when to spell check, or choose not at all.

(My Mail app (below) is an earlier version, but likely similar to what you see)

If needed: Apple support's "Settings" article for MacOS 15.5:

Change Composing settings in Mail on Mac - Apple Support

Else: If you you really want command over the spell-checker while it is checking prior to sending the message,

You could try re-starting your Mac (Apple menu > Restart) wait to log back in ...

Then check whether or not you now see the red X ok, instead of it being greyed out when sending.

(ie: Restarting often restores order if something is not working as expected.)

or

If still not possible, you may want to send feedback to Apple : Feedback - Mail - Apple:

Thanks brbo for your reply. This Spell Checker behavior is relatively new, I think a few weeks old. I prefer to have the spell check at the end before sending as I find it distracting to check while I'm typing.

I just noticed that when I hit the Send icon and the Spell Checker window opens, it is not the active window. Or maybe semi-active would be a better description as I can make corrections but the red X is grayed out. If I make it the active window by clicking on the top, the red (and other) X's become active and I can close the window. But that does not solve the problem as the Send icon is still grayed out so the message cannot be sent and winds up in Drafts.

At this point I think I will follow your suggeston and contact Apple.

Thanks again.
