How to screen record on macbook air m4 with audio?

Got a MacBook Air M4 and need to record my screen with audio, including system sound (like video playback or app audio). The built-in screen recorder only captures microphone audio, not internal audio.

I've seen suggestions for third-party tools, but not sure which method works best on an Apple Silicon Mac. Has anyone successfully done this on an M4 Mac? Free options would be ideal, but paid tools are also welcome if they're easy to use.

Thanks in advance!

to record the mac's internal sound with quicktime (or also “shift-command-5”) you need additional software. i use the free BlackHole Virtual Audio Driver. then you can choose "BlackHole 2ch" in the recording options instead of "Built-in Microphone."

you will also need to set up a multi-output device in your audio MIDI setup utility to be able to both hear and record the internal audio at the same time.

to set up a multi-output device:

Open Audio MIDI Setup: (found in /Applications/Utilities)

hit the '+' button in the bottom left corner and select "Create Multi Output Device"

then in the panel that appears on the right, in the Multi-Output Device tab, select "Built-in Output" AND "BlackHole 2ch". (and, if you want, any of your other connected devices.)

once you do that, (and BEFORE recording) you can choose "BlackHole 2ch" or "Multi-Output Device" in your menubar "sound options".

to both hear the speakers and record the audio at the same time, choose "Multi-Output Device". before choosing multi-out, set the internal speakers' volume to a comfortable level first. you cannot control the volume once you are in multi-out mode.

You are looking for a best screen record on Mac? OBS Studio is a powerful, free, and open-source tool for screen recording on Mac. It offers advanced features like customizable scenes, multiple sources, and high-quality recordings.

Here's how to get started with OBS Studio on Mac:

Very useful information thank you, but, I can't find what looks like an audio driver when I search the App Store for Blackhole. Twice I've been made very aware by Apple Support that installing Apps from outside the App Store is a no no. Surely there must be drivers to activate internal audio in the App Store somewhere, or is this a tolerated loophole? Many thanks

you won't find blackhole in the App Store. it can be had at the link I provided.

I'm not sure why you were told that. especially by apple support. but getting apps from outside the App Store is perfectly acceptable. you just need to do your research to verify it is a safe app, and only download it directly from the developer's website.

sorry, but blackhole, as well as any similar apps that will provide that capability can only be found outside of the App Store.
