how to not move a MIDI region in piano roll?

When you try and click/drag in the timeline of the piano roll, the green (whatever color your midi region is) bar is tied to the region and will actually move the region! how do I disable this annoying feature? I am constantly needing to click here to place the playhead but accedentaly move the region!

I know you can lock region to SIMPTE but this also locks the notes in the region and I am currently editing the MIDI notes, that is why the Piano Roll is open.

Do the people writing this app use it? It really feels so buggy. After leaving Logic for may years I thought Logic would be further along than it is now but so far very disapointed.

AHHHH...now I get it.

It has never bothered me once but I can see from your viewpoint. Perhaps, it is because I use "," and "." to move the playhead. I also really like "/" which is Move to Position. You should try it.

Thanks Eddie, but my old brain missed the point of Mark's message. I see he's trying to re-position the Playhead.

Mark, you can't drag it to move it in the MIDI Editor, but you can slide the editing work area left and right using the Gesture of one finger on the top of your Magic Mouse or Trackpad. Once you get to where you want the Playhead, click (but don't drag!) on the Green area.

I never click and drag in that area you're talking about.

I select/highlight the MIDI notes I want to move and then I slide them left/right, up/down.

  1. Either, cmd + a to select All of the notes in a Region, or, drag the mouse pointer and lasso the MIDI notes you want to move, or click on them one at a time to select them.
  2. Put your mouse pointer on any one of the highlighted MIDI notes and drag them to where you want them. Or, press Option + an arrow key to move them up or down a semitone or left and right by the grid division you have set. Option + Shift to move the notes up or down an octave at a time.

Is that what you're trying to do?

Okay, Mark, now I'm going to look up how to move the MIDI editor work area not using gestures.

I prefer to use the keyboard to move my MIDI notes, because I find it more precise than the mouse, for sure. I might have to change the divisions or turn off Snap-to to nudge notes, but the arrow keys are pretty simple for me, and I'm an old man. Lol

And, thank you, Eddie. I'm going to look up those shortcuts you just shared. You have a wealth of knowledge, which will help this old dog learn new tricks.

I'll be back after I find out how else to do it, or maybe Eddie already told us the only other ways?

"click (but don't drag!) "

This is the point, A user should not have to be carefull to not move the mouse when clicking.

Often I move the mouse slightly when clicking while editing MIDI notes, happens all the time, most interfaces take this in to consideration. To have to slow down to be carefull shows bad interface design.

I am using a tradition mouse, No track pad or "not so Magic Mouse"

To be clear, I'm not trying to move any notes or any region, I am only wanting to move the play head to before the mid notes I have just edited so I can hear them playback. In the process of doing this, it is very easy to shift the whole region, which can go unnoticed, knocking the whole region out of sync with the rest of the track. I don't work with quantize and snapping. This is all free flow to keep the human feel.

Juan the area to collect to move the play head should be anywhere in the track, too. There should be an option to lock a region but still edit notes. Two simple things Apple could implement that would solve this problem. I get it most people work with snapping to a grid and using a computer algorithms to try to emulate human

feel, but that's not what I do.
