I wasn’t in the mood to see what the other person’s response was because we were in a bit of an argument so I just swiped their iMessage off from my notifications, thinking to myself that I would just open it later when I’m in a different place mentally but now it’s gone completely from our messages thread and I did not get to see what their reply was. Please help ?

First time I’m hearing about this happen. Messages can’t just disappear from a thread. Are you sure they actually sent a message? Wouldn’t you have seen the preview of the message on the Lock Screen? Can you ask them what they said? Is this an ongoing issue? Or did it happen just this one time?
What you could also do is check your recently deleted folder in the Messages app see if it appears there.
