Files on Aperture photo app: want to download to an external HD backup: what is BEST way (not necessarily fastest) way?

Just the files? Export them fromAperture to the external drive. File -> Export. Remember Aperture has a lot of export options so be sure thread the Help on exporting to make sure you get what you want.

I was imprecise; I would like to keep (i.e., back up) the manipulated (color-corrected, etc.) versions. I don’t need the originals also.
As I said, there are many export options so check the help on Exporting Versions. These will yield the edited photos.
