How to fix missing voice directions in Apple Maps on iPhone SE?

On my iPhone SE (18.5) I seem to *sometimes* have a problem where Apple maps doesn't speak directions when traveling somewhere. No changes to audio settings. It always displays the map, and always displays text directions, but there is no audio. Can someone explain why that might be the case?

Hello!

The only thing I can think of is maybe the device is connecting to some Bluetooth device, such as your car (with the volume turned down) or wireless earbuds, (which could be on if the case they’re in is dead, they don’t necessarily have to be out of the case).

Also, the volume on your car speakers or iPhone or earbud, whatever you use when driving could have the volume accidentally turned down somehow.

There’s a button you’ll see when starting a route, that should display a volume symbol with little curves, and not the same symbol with a caution sign next to it, or a line through it.

Just my ideas.

Thanks, yes, I'm just starting to diagnose this. I just can't understand why sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't and I haven't been diddling with any audio settings. But yes, I need to pay attention to that mute button. At least in CarPlay, the radio can be turned off entirely, but CarPlay will still speak with the car speakers.

About a year ago, I set up a destination in Illinois from Michigan in Apple Maps on my M4 iPad Pro. During the drive, Apple maps was not only exceptionally accurate with directions, but it was talkative, sometimes to a fault. In both directions, and even when I left the route and then later rejoined it. I was quite impressed with maps.

In late April this year, I entered a route to Cedar Falls, IA from Michigan and Apple Maps was spot on for the entire round trip. Never lost is voice either… That was iPadOS 18.
