Why has Pixelmator stopped working since yesterday?

I bought Pixelmator years ago and didn't use it much. A few days ago, I found it is part of Apple OS now and I began to have fun changing backgrounds on my eBay photos. Today, it isn't working or not in the way it was. I'm baffled.

VERY WEIRD!!! I was using the PIXELMATOR BASIC with no problems for an hour and then suddenly... CRASH, CRASH, CRASH.

I thought it was the photo I was working on so I tried opening another photo (jpg) and CRASH. Tried rebooting system with same result Pilexmator Basic... CRASH.

Did the BOOT INTO SAFE MODE thingy with no improvement... CRASHING in safe mode too.

I just happen to have purchased the Pixelmator PRO version long ago but always preferred using the BASIC version since I only do basic photo editing. The basic version for me was all I needed and easier to use.

WELL FOLKS, after installing the PRO version Pixelmator Pro version is now working and working on the photo that the BASIC was crashing on.

Obviously, this is an Apple OS issue. OBVIOUSLY. They have changed something, altered something, whatever. But whatever is causing crashing with the BASIC version. I expect we will find other programs suddenly crashing out of the blue because of whatever Apple has recently done to their OS of late.

Come on guys... just fix it. Whatever it is, just fix it.

I have had Pixelmator Classic 3.9.11 running just fine in Sequoia 15.5 on a MacBook Air for some time now. It continues to work fine today.

I see that Apple have acquired the Pixelmator application and Pixelmator Pro is available in the Mac App Store online. As far as I can determine, Pixelmator is not part of the macOS.

I suggest that you make sure that your OS is updated to the latest release of your currently installed version.

Since a simple reboot of your Mac doesn’t fix things, see if the problem still happens in safe mode.  Safe mode will often correct weird software behavior by forcing the OS to clear caches, do disk repair and other self-maintenance and housekeeping and temporarily disables third-party mods.

Does the Pixelmator still crash while in Safe mode?

You can exit safe mode by restarting your Mac normally, then reevaluate the problem.

Apple owns Pixelmator now: Pixelmator – Blog – A new home for Pixelmator (November 1, 2024)

It is not part of any Apple OS. I found three Pixelmator products in the App Store, all of which now list Apple as the developer.

  • Pixelmator – $9.99 – for iOS devices, but not for Macs.
  • Pixelmator Pro – $49.99 – for Mac.
  • Photomator – "Free" to download, but with in-app "subscription" purchases – for iOS devices and Macs.

If you purchased Pixelmator Classic from the App Store before it was discontinued, you presumably would have the option to download it again from your Purchased app list.

Pixelmator stopped working suddenly, in the middle of an edit for me. I thought I had a corrupted image, and did a re-install. No warning about it no longer working on iMac computers. I don't want to pay an expensive subscription to use it. Will Apple GIVE ME a version that works on a computer? I see there is now a "Pro" version for sale. It is not fair to pull the plug on something that has been working for a decade!

August 15, 2025: I have a 3 very large projects I was working on using Pix-Classic this morning around 12:15 AM. Later today "Classic" crashed and crashed and crashed. In the past I bought Classic and Pro. What Apple did since yesterday to crash my program has really annoyed me. Sure I could use Pro. Yet Classic is easier to use on my current projects.

Usually Apple gives us a head start notice on updates. I do not allow automatic updates until I know I read that is stable with APPS I use.
