MacBook Pro 2015 (macOS 12.7.6) permissions issue for HTML files on external drive

My Macbook Pro is running 12.7.6 as the last system update available for the 2015 model.

I use Whisk to make html pages for my website. All the html files and assets are all made on this computer and always saved to the same external hard drive.

Today I couldn't alter any html file for one website folder, the following message was shown when any chane was attempted; "You don’t have permission to write to the folder that the file “Life-Impressions.html” is in."

The External Drive, the Folder, and subfolder, the html document all have myself, staff, everyone with Privilege set as Read & Write

This issue also exists for any txt files in the same folder on the same external hard drive.

A different website folder on the same external drive has no issues, I can open the html, alter it and then save Without a permissions issue warning.

I put the html assets and an html file from the external drive into a folder on the desktop without altering the permissions and then the html file has no issues to be altered, except for I need to also put all the images etc. But there are 1 gb of files in the folder and many html files to alter, so I prefer to alter directly from the external drive.

Is there any reason or logic why this situation of one folder having permission issues exists, yet more importantly–how to resolve the issue? It doesn't make sense.

I would welcome any advice. Thank you

Sharing & Permissions for OS 12.7.6 only has

You have custom access.

The only options are

Read & Write

Read only

Write only (Drop Box)

An “Ignore ownership on this volume” checkbox is not shown.

It’s strange that just one folder on the external HD mentioned above, which contains html files, images, and text files, all have an issue of being unable to be modified; as these files where developed and saved from this computer this issue seems strange. The issue didn’t exist previously.

Other folders on the same external HD with the same content website files content, that were also developed and saved on this computer, have no issues and can be modified.

I have a different HD that is use to store a different group of files. As a test I transferred the 1 gb folder with the website files that had issues; without doing anything. Once transferred to the different drive I could open, change, and save the files in that folder on that different HD. As I have 30 or so websites I would like to keep all the website folders on the current HD they have existed to now for easy access and cross linking.

Any ideas why just one folder could have issues would be welcome. The situation seems illogical.

Thank you.

Another potential issue I've found is that the external HD information (control i) shows;

Created: 18 November 2010 at 23:28

Capacity:  1 TB

Available: 609.57 GB (136.4 MB purgeable)

Used: 390,612,070,400 bytes (390.61 GB on disk)

I'm curious what the (136.4 MB purgeable) actually means. Does this refer to 136.4 MB on the drive that can be "purged". If so, how to purge these 136.4 MB. Empty trash is not highlighted.

Any ideas on this issue and the original question will be most helpful. Thank you
