I am missing the 'Recent' indicator for email sender on my iPhone

It the past, on the iphone, when I got a message, I could click on the email and it would open the contact card and say RECENT next to the email being used. NOW it says nothing. If anything it should be highlighted NOT say RECENT which makes NO SENSE. Someone please tell me how to fix this. On the Mac mail, you click on the my name and it shows all the email addresses and has a checkmark, WHICH MAKES SENSE. WHY IS THIS NOT ON IPHONE?
