Canon Pro-1000 driver 4.0 not displaying Printer Options in macOS Sequoia 15.5

With much weeping and gnashing of teeth I succeeded in downloading "the latest" driver for my Canon Pro-1000 on my MacBook Pro M1 16" running macOS Sequoia 15.5. from https://www.canon-europe.com/support/business/products/wide-format-printers/imageprograf/pro-series/imageprograf-pro-1000.html?type=drivers&language=EN&os=macOS%2015%20(Sequoia) . Two drivers seem to be offered; I chose the first, imagePROGRAF PRO-1000 series Full Driver & Software Package (Mac), assuming that it would include some "bells and whistles" that the second, imagePROGRAF PRO-1000 series CUPS Printer Driver Ver.29.1.0.0 (Mac), didn't..

The .dmg downloaded and mounted a volume when I clicked it. It contained Setup.app that evidently requires an admin login, but didn't provide a dialog for it. (I rarely login as admin, because I don't like the idea that everything that needs admin permissions have them automatically. Woking as a non-admin user forces things that need admin permissions to ask for them.) So I had to login as admin, which I probably haven't done for many generations of macOS, and, of course, this user's use of my Apple-ID and my iCloud stuff had to be setup. Long story short, once that was completed I was able to download the Full Driver & Software Package and run the Setup.app.

Unfortunately, the driver that was installed seems not to offer the Printer Options that I was accustomed to using when I last used the printer. Curiously, when I examine the information about it in Settings > Printers & Scanners I see "Kind: Canon PRO-1000 series-AirPrint" ver. 4.0, whereas, for the old driver, the kind of driver is "Canon PRO-1000 series" ver. 29.1.0.0. This driver seems offer the Printer Options that are missing in the other. I believe it's an old driver that didn't seem to work before I installed what's evidently an AirPrint (Bonjour) driver.

My question is this: Is what I'm observing simply the difference between two different drivers, i.e., had I installed the CUPS driver I would have had the Printer Options? I don't want to delete the "old" driver that presently supports Printer Options and install the CUPS driver (second driver on Canon's Pro-1000 Drivers page), only to find that it doesn't support Printer Options.

The dates for those drivers tell a story. The CUPS driver is dated shortly after Sequoia v15.0 was released to software update and the full package driver was released in April 2025, well into the Sequoia update cycle. The latter is also only 1/3 the size of the CUPS driver installer.

I would focus on the April 2025 driver as it would have the best chance for Sequoia compatibility, or use the AirPrint solution with no Canon Pro-1000 drivers installed to avoid any conflicts.

Canon may not include the same functionality in both drivers and that would be a conversation you can have with them.

Also note that Canon offers the Printer Firmware Updater (Mac) for the imagePROGRAF PRO-1000 Ver.2.6 dated from Nov 2024 that will update the printer firmware to v3.010. Unnecessary if you are already at the firmware version, but if not, it may enable missing features in the full driver. Again, talk to Canon.

Thank-you for your reply. I apologize for taking so long to acknowledge it. I think I have sorted this whole mess out.

I finally decided to try downloading the second (CUPS) driver. It did not require me to change to an admin user in order to install it. Instead, it prompted me for an admin user and password during the installation; however, once installed, what appeared in the System Settings | Printers & Scanners | Add printer, Scanner or Fax was only an AirPrint driver for the Canon Pro-1000. Sure enough, when I selected that driver, the "crippled" driver (i.e., the one that does not support Printer Options) was installed. By selecting IP instead of Default I received a mask that allowed me to specify the IP address of the printer IPP protocol. That resulted in a pinter what supports the Printer Options; however, the need to specify the IP address, the name of the printer in the wireless router was not supported, was unsatisfactory. Long story short, open CUPS 2.3.4 in a browser window (i.e., http://localhost:631/ in a browser) did the trick. To get past the initial screen I needed to enter cupsctl WebInterface=yes in Terminal and, somewhere along the line, supply an admin user and password. For that, the CUPS driver that I had installed in the computer was displayed. I chose it without having to specify an IP address for the printer, and I'm happy.

On a philosophical note, I wonder why it's such a pain in the gluteals to take full advantage of such a printer. From a high-end graphics printer one expects to be able to specify the paper, color profile, etc. That can't be done with the AirPrint driver.

Rhetorically speaking, I have no philosophical idea… 💡

Glad you got it working though PITA it must have been. I use an older Samsung b/w laser and Canon LIDE 400 scanner using strictly using AirPrint. The ImageGraph Pro-1000 is a high-end device and Canon should be better with its driver support than this.
