You can try to boot into Internet Recovery Mode using Command + Option + R to attempt to access the online macOS 10.13 High Sierra installer. However, some Macs may only access the online installer for the version of macOS which originally shipped with the Mac from the factory.

To upgrade macOS 10.8.5 to 10.13 will require two OS upgrades. First, you will need to download the macOS 10.11 El Capitan installer using any computer or OS that can access the Internet. The El Capitan installer is available for download from Apple's official servers from outside of the App Store. Transfer the downloaded DMG file to your MBAir. Mount the DMG and run the .pkg file to extract the real full installer into the Applications folder. Then go to the Applications folder to actually run the El Capitan installer.
