Screen recording control not showing on my Mac mini

When I start new screen recording, the recording control does not show. I'm doing a screen in screen recording with a movie recording window. I would like to be able to pause the recording but cannot. I'm supposed to be able to, apparently, hover over the record button which is now a stop button on the control and hold option while I psuh the button.

My problem is, there is no button to hover over or push. I can record by clicking the box that says record beside Options (each time I have to choose the Desktop as the saving spot option manually or the recording saves to "Quick Time Player" and I don't get the option to trim or delete).

I think I'm missing something. (why is it changing the word "a m" to two asterisks?)

Screen recording from Quicktime Player or Command-Shift-5 do the same thing.

If you open Quicktime Player, and do File->New Screen Recording, you see the very same interface as you would with pressing the shortcut directly.

As an alternative to Pause, you can start a new recording and then collate the two or more recordings after the fact, using Quicktime Player.

Or maybe one of the third party screen recording tools works best for you. There are several good ones (ScreenFlow, Camtasia and more).

Thanks. Stopping and starting is not a problem. I want to pause the recording. To do that every instruction says to hover over the record button that would have changed to a stop button, hold option while pushing that button and it will act as a pause button.

I think it is recording through the screenshot app and not QuickTime. I’m not sure how to change that. I am guessing the functionality has been removed and that I can’t pause the recording. I am hoping there is a way.

I have been using the menu method after opening QuickTime and it opens the other interface automatically. I have never seen the QuickTime control that shows up in every video on the topic.

it’s good to know I can collate videos together in QuickTime. That’s more work than I wanted to do, but if it’s possible it will have to be that.

It is always a little frustrating when the solution is using other software because it is more functional than what I have, but that’s the way it goes sometimes. I am sure there are ways I can do this in Final Cut Pro or iMovie, I was just happy to find an easy way in QuickTime. I’ll just have to be more perfect so that I don’t need to pause!
