If your iPod is not seen in iTunes, try these two articles:

If your phone is synced with your library on your computer you would normally remove the unwanted items from the library, then sync with the library to update the device.

Or you can see Delete music in the Apple Music app - Apple Support and delete the music directly from the device if the device is manually managed.

If you have the Apple Music or iTunes Match subscription services then changes you make in one place should be reflected in any others connected to your iCloud Music Library.

If you have content on your device that is not in your library and you want to save it see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device - Apple Community. Syncing with a new computer (to the device) that doesn't already contain your old library can result in all non-purchased media being wiped from the device.

That's irrelevant, Windows Explorer cannot access the music on the iPod.

but as noted in the photo the circle round the image of a connected ipod in itunes does not appear

I believe the circle is simply added to the screenshot to emphasise where to look and what to look for. I will assume though, that the icon for the device (in your case an iPod Classic) is not being shown.

Are you using a Wi-Fi connection to look at the iPod or have you connected it to your computer with a USB cable? If you have not yet done so, connect it to the computer with a cable and respond to any messages that pop up on either on your computer or on the iPod. Typically, the message on the computer may say something like "see what happens when this device is connected". I think that there may not be any message on the iPod Classic itself.

Thanks for reply --- yes it is relevant the ipod classic connects to the computer with a wire and windows sees it as a usb drive when the ipod connected with the cable the screen changes to "connected" --- I can "see" the files on the "usb drive" because the explorer is set to show all files --- even hidden files

The network connection to the windows OS is "irrelevant" since itunes is syncing files from the computer's hard drive to the ipod which the OS sees and an external usb drive

While copying off the hidden files from a classic may be used as an emergency measure to save your files, you cannot use Windows Explorer to update the library of content on the device, that must be done through iTunes. Follow the second link that the fiend posted. If you are using the Microsoft Store build of iTunes try swapping to the traditional installer. Update the device driver for the iPod exactly as described, even when Windows claims you already have the best device driver.
