How does Apple Watch track time without pause or resume?

Say I start an outdoor walk, stop and hit “pause” forget to hit “resume” and walk another 1/4 mile (or so) when the watch will ask “resume walk?” If I say “yes” will that additional 1/4 mile be counted or will it pick up only from where I said “yes” to “resume walk”? Along those same lines, what if I when stop I DON’T his “pause” OR “resume”, will the watch account for that in time calculations?
