AOL goes offline in IMac Mail

My AOL account keeps going offline in Mail on IMac. I have tried all the usual solutions: checking internet connection; taking AOL online; removing and reinstalling account in Mail; closing and reopening Mail. Has anyone figured out a) why this happens, b) how to prevent it, c) how to fix it permanently?
