Mail just started doing strange things

I have had issues the last few days with good emails being send to my junk work email which is not an iCloud account. I have tried setting them up as not junk and putting them back in my inbox. I had to do that so many times that I finally reset mail twice, and now (Ihope) they are staying in my inbox. Early this evening I had over 700 emails and now only show 142 and not sure how that happened. That said, I went to delete an email a few minutes ago and a pop up asked me if I really wanted to delete 119 messages! Of course I didn't delete the email. Then I decided to delete everything in trash and I got the same thing only asking if I really wanted to delete 353 messages, so I don't know what is happening! I must have not noticed this earlier and deleted hundreds of emails. Can anyone help me with this?
