Force FaceTime on Mac to use AirPods

When I make FaceTime calls on my Mac Mini, even if my AirPods are on and connected, FaceTime makes the call using the Mac’s own audio rather than the AirPods. When I hang up and the other person calls me back, the AirPods work.

How can I force the Mac to use AirPods for outgoing FaceTime calls?
