I am trying to check the version of python ionstalled on my laptop but the terminal keeps showing the Users/name/version file can't be opened. and no such file or directory. What should I do?

python3 --version
according to the wikipedia article on Python:
"Python 3.0, released in 2008, was a major revision not completely backward-compatible with earlier versions."
... so you need to specify what version, as there is no 'generic' python.
try typing
python3
Python 3.9.6 (default, Dec 7 2023, 05:42:47)
