Live Photo turned off by Apple after taking a few pics in live

I was taking pictures with Live Photo on, and the Preserve setting is enabled in settings, so that Live Photos is turned on for every photo taken. I had a bunch that were live pictures, and a good chunk in btwn that changed to still photos, and very blurry. Then a few pictures later, the pics were live again. Why is Apple doing this?

This isn't the first time this has happened

iPhone 13, iOS 18

Are you using iCloud Photos and is "Optimize iPhone Storage" turned on?

If your iPhone is running low on storage, the Photos.app may remove the video component of your Live Photos and keep it only in iCloud to save local storage. You need to be connected to the internet to be able to see the Live Photos, that have become optimized, in full quality again.

The optimize Storage may also remove the depth maps from Portrait Photos and remove large videos.

To prevent this, keep your Photos Library small enough to fit onto your iPhone in the full resolution, so you can disable the "Optimize Storage" feature.
