Out of range error connecting Mac Mini M2 to HP monitor via VGA-HDMI adapter

Using a VGA to HDMI adaptor to connect to the mini's HDMI port. Monitor displays "Input signal out of range,  change settings to 1600x900 60Hz." Obviously can't change the mini settings without a monitor to access menus on, and I'm not finding anything in the monitor's menus that seems helpful.

Is this a case where the monitor just won't be compatible, or can I get it working if I borrow a monitor that works and can get the mini's settings adjusted? It's being set up for purposes that don't need particularly good graphics, but I wasn't sure if that was an available setting for the mini.

Hello, have you tried using other monitors if not give it a try. Then if out of range or no signal still appears try using other types of connectors or trying to perform DFU reset.

Hope this makes sense.
