M1 randomly moves cursor around, repeats or cycles advancement of webpages, switches webpages, closes windows, and other odd things when I am typing.

I typically use Firefox or Brave browser (don't like Safari), depending on the subject matter I am using it for (Firefox for school & streaming; Brave for shopping & web searches).

Some years ago I had an issue with Google gmail where the cursor would randomly pop all over the place when I would be typing an email. It was quite frustrating when trying to do any kind of work. Then, at least for a few years, I didn't have it anymore.

Now, the problem is much worse. The cursor randomly appears, disappears, and my typing shows up anywhere in the email I'm typing up, or even on the website I happen to be on. I've also dealt with repeat or back-up typing in the subject bar (cursor pops up in the middle of the typed info and just types in the middle of it, messing up what was already there), pages not scrolling, or repeat-scrolling, and just simple non-responsiveness of the touchpad or keys at times also. I've had webpages randomly close, documents not save, and other strange and random issues occur.

I am using MacOS Monterey 12.6.7 on my MacBook Air (M1, 2020) which is a quite recent OS. I don't like using the latest OS put out (like version MacOS 15 Sequoia or MacOS 26 Tahoe) because they usually have bugs or other problems that need to be worked out or fixed first.

I have no idea how to fix these issues. I have tried workarounds, but not only are the problems time-consuming and frustrating, but so are the workarounds I've developed.

Is there any way you can help? This computer is still new to me and I cannot afford to buy yet another computer - to keep up with the latest trends or for school & work. I am on a strict budget while I am working on my master degree. To that end, I need my computer (and browsers) to WORK.

Sincerely,

DV Young

Are you sure this isn't accidental input where your thumb pad, wrist, or other hand/body part is brushing against the trackpad as you type, and the OS is interpreting this as input?

If that's the case, check System Settings -> Trackpad and try adjusting the speed and/or sensitivity settings so they require more input before registering an action. Unfortunately there's no option to disable the trackpad completely.
