Family member unable to view my location with Family Sharing

Hi everyone,

I’m having trouble with location sharing in Family Sharing and I’m hoping someone can help me figure this out. A family member in my Family Sharing group can’t see my location, even though I’ve checked and enabled all the relevant settings I know of.

Here’s what I’ve done so far:

Location Services are enabled on my device.
I’ve allowed location access for Find My.
Share My Location is turned on in Find My and in my iCloud settings.
The family member is listed correctly in my Family Sharing group.
The family member can share their location with me, but they can’t see mine.
We’ve both restarted our devices (iPhone 13 and iPhone 15, both on iOS 17.5.1).

Possible solutions I’ve seen online that I already tried:

Signing out of iCloud and signing back in.
Toggling Share My Location off and on again.
Removing and re-adding the family member to the Family Sharing group.
Checking that Find My iPhone is enabled.
Verifying there are no Screen Time or privacy restrictions blocking location sharing.

I’m not sure what else to check at this point. Has anyone experienced something similar or can suggest other things to review? I’d appreciate any guidance.

If they can see your device’s location but not your location under People, it’s likely tied to how your personal location is being shared, not just the device.

Could you try manually sharing your location with that family member, if you haven’t already?

In Find My, go to the People tab
Tap the + to start sharing your location
Add that family member and choose to share indefinitely

Doing this should force the connection to show up within the People tab.

Darn. Okay, well good on you for having tried that.

You mentioned both devices are on 17.5.1. Would you consider updating to 18 (18.5)?

There were a few issues noted from users with iOS 17 around location. And while you did mention the actual location of the device is able to be seen, and it being the People tab that’s the issue, maybe upgrading could help.

Nice troubleshooting! Seems like you’ve tried what I’d typically suggest.

One thing you could try again is opening Find My, tapping “Me,” and making sure the location is being shared “From This Device”. But I know you’ve mentioned you’ve done that already.

If things are onfigured correctly, and you’ve gone through the steps you mentioned, it might be worth reaching out to Apple Support.

A few questions for you:

Do you just have the one device, or are there others you have?
If you do have another Apple device, is that family member able to see it/them?
Is this only happening with this one family member not be able to see the location, or are other in the group also not able to see it?

Hi! Thanks a lot for your reply. Below:

I already tried to change the location from my iPhone and Apple Watch to my iPad, with no luck.
This is the interesting part, yesterday I found that the family member can indeed access my devices location, but is unable to see my location in People.
This is happening only with this family member. All other members can see my location without any issue.

Feels like Find My is somehow blocking the family member from locating me, as a person, but allows her to see my devices location.

Yes, I’ve already tried that without success. I’m not sure what’s causing the issue. The family member mentioned that this has been happening for quite some time, so I would also rule out a temporary glitch.

This is one of those rare cases where “it just works” doesn’t seem to apply.
