Can't update iTunes/Music on High Sierra

I have an ancient Air running High Sierra, and I still have the iTunes app on it. I never "upgraded" to the Music app because I didn't want to destroy some of the carefull curated song metadata in the upgrade process (specifically, last time I tried, it delete all my star ratings, or else they weren't visisble anymore.)

So now I guess I have no choice since the iTunes app can't connect to IOS 18 on my phone. It asks if I want to upgrade when I connect the phone, but when I accept the download, it can't be installed "because of a network problem."

So - I guess I wated too long to upgrade and I'm screwed?

I can't think of any other way to bulk-load audio onto my phone other than iTunes. Are there any other apps that work for those of us who can't sync any more?

Which of the two applications you get depends on which version of macOS you are running. There was never an option to upgrade to Music on High Sierra.

You may be able to upgrade macOS on that MacBook Air. How far would depend upon the hardware model year (from  > About This Mac). Note that Catalina and later break 32-bit applications.

High Sierra is theoretically enough to manage an iPhone 16 running iOS 18.

----------

Syncing to a Mac or PC requires:

  • macOS Catalina 10.15 or later using the Finder
  • macOS High Sierra 10.13 through macOS Mojave 10.14.6 using iTunes 12.8 or later
  • Windows 10 or later using iTunes 12.12.10 or later (free download from apple.com/itunes/download)

----------

I say theoretically because people in these forums have, for some time, reported mixed experiences with using High Sierra to manage iPhones running iOS 17 and 18.

If you are running a version of iTunes earlier than 12.8.3, you may want to download 12.8.3 from here:

There is a third-party application called iMazing whose vendors claim it allows for iPhone management, and that it will run on El Capitan and later. I don't know how well it works, one way or the other.

After hours of fiddling, the Air managed to sync via Wifi. It hangs at "Backup" the first time, but when I cancel the sync and start a second one, it succeeds. Magic?

My iTunes version is 12.8.3.1, same as on the download page you referred. I have no idea what the "upgrade" it's suggesting is, might be authentication-related since I have to re-trust the Air evey time the phone tries to sync.

This Air can't upgrade beyond HIgh Sierra. I have two of this vinatge actually, I installed Linux Mint on the other and amazingly, it works well. Another Mac saved from the landfill! I plan to do the same with this one as soon as I feel comfortable taking the photos and music off of it. The batteries on both are also relatively functional.

Still no resolution the this "network error". I figure it means the upgrade is gone.
