cricket wireless hotspot not downloading gmail on MacBook Air

I use a cricket wireless hotspot while camping. when connected to the hotspot with my MacBook Air I get internet without any issues. However when I try to check my gmail it times out or what ever it does, I get the following error message "Connections to the server “imap.gmail.com” on the default ports timed out. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
