Determining AppleCare status for canceled iMac order

Back in September of 2024 I went online and ordered an iMac and AppleCare for that iMac to be delivered to my local Apple Store. When they took it out of the box to begin setting it up I noticed that it only had two ports which aren't enough, so rather than take delivery I had them cancel the order, forgetting that there was AppleCare attached to it.

I thought nothing more about it until June 24th of this year when I got an email from Apple asking me to "Complete your AppleCare+ setup" for $59.99. I then contacted Apple asking for a cancelation of coverage and a full refund. The person I spoke to told me that the best she could do would be to prorate a rebate of $14.00. I'm semi-okay with that but how can I determine if the coverage is still in effect?

I believe what is going on is when Apple canceled the iMac in-store, the system may have properly voided the iMac’s order and payment, but the AppleCare+ coverage was treated as a separate agreement — which it technically is, even though it’s associated with a specific serial number. Since the Mac was never activated, and the AppleCare+ never got fully linked to an active device, Apple’s system is flagging it as "pending activation" and sending you those follow-up emails to complete setup.

If you want to determine if the AppleCare+ plan is actually active or not, try the following:

  1. Go to [checkcoverage.apple.com](https://checkcoverage.apple.com/).
  2. Enter the serial number of the iMac (the original receipt may have itt) If the Mac never got activated, you might get a message saying the device hasn't been registered yet, which confirms the AppleCare+ was never linked.
  3. Log into your Apple Account Subscriptions page @ https://appleid.apple.com. If the AppleCare+ plan is active and billed under your Apple Account, it should show up there. If it’s missing, it’s either not active or not associated with your account.
  4. Try contacting Apple Support again. Give them the exact timeline (especially the fact that the hardware was never delivered or activated), and request verification that no AppleCare+ contract is associated with any active device under your name or Apple Account. Ask them to confirm whether the contract ever officially started. If not, you could make the case again for a full refund due to non-activation and failure of the coverage to attach to a valid product. If they still insist the contract is in place, even without a device, ask for a copy of the AppleCare+ Agreement Number (it’ll be something like XXXXXXXXXXX) and request the “contract status and association” report. That should help push the issue up a tier if needed.
