Disabling auto-connect on Bluetooth hearing aids

I originally posted this a few months ago, but I never quite got a solution. So I’ve rephrased it a little bit and I thought I’d try again.

Some time ago, I began wearing hearing aids. One of their features is that they’re Bluetooth-enabled; this allows connection to a mobile app, and also streaming audio. The sound quality is not that great compared to Bluetooth ear buds, but I use it in high-ambient-noise situations, and besides, my ears are shot anyway — hence the hearing aids. So I’ve paired them to my iMac, my iPad, my iPhone, and to my AppleTV. They basically work well.

The [not so much a problem as a] petty annoyance is that, when I take them out of their charger — which effectively turns them on — my devices connect to them automatically. It even happens if I leave the apartment; when I come back my devices at home (my Apple TV and my iMac) will try to connect to them. So I need to manually disconnect the hearing aids from each device in turn (unless I have a reason otherwise). And with my AppleTV, it connects more-or-less randomly, and I need to manually disconnect through the Settings app. Just deselecting them in the “Audio” section of the Control Center isn’t enough, they will reconnect some apparently random time later.

I don’t see any way of disabling “auto connect“ on any of the devices. I could forget the hearing aids and then re-pair them as needed, but putting them in pairing mode is less than convenient. (I need to turn them off, then turn them on — that’s the somewhat-clumsy part — and then pair them. They’re then in pairing mode for two minutes.) Disconnecting them each time is actually simpler, but still quite annoying.

My original post inquired about the possibility of a shortcut or something I could use with Siri, along the lines of “disconnect hearing aids”. But I can’t find any action in the shortcuts app about connecting or disconnecting a specific Bluetooth device. So let’s forget about that, is there any way to disable “auto-connect” for a specific Bluetooth device, or even generally?

I am Terminal- and Property List Editor-friendly.

I don't know either. Anyway, just to clarify my previous example shortcut:

  • The action is called Change Playback Destination.
  • Its first parameter defaults to Set, but tap that to choose the Remove option:

This e-book is not quite current, but would help with the basics and a free sample can be downloaded:

Hi Alan, I wanted to reply to your kind attempts at help. I'd like to know where you're finding things like the "remove" action. I looked and I could not find it. I wish I could find a "Shortcuts for Dummies" kind of thing. (Maybe you have something you can recommend?) I've had the same trouble with Automator and AppleScript. I get to the point where I can't find some component, or can't seem to get the syntax right, or something, and I don't really have anywhere to turn (ChatGPT has been suprisingly helpful).

Regarding this particular issue, I think trying to come up with a shortcut to disconnect a particular device is a suboptimal approach. The way to do it would be to disable auto-connect. I don't know if that's even possible.

Anyway, thanks for the help.

I found your post completely by accident, and am completely puzzled by it. Most Mac users can not get their hearing aids to pair with ANYTHING except the hearing APP in their iPhone. Nothing. Ever.

The only way I have been able to get my SmartTV to CONSIDER pairing directly with my Hearing Aids was if it thought the Hearing Aids were a Bluetooth remote control, and not otherwise.

My Mac has no known ability to pair with my Hearing Aids in any way. I have tried, and both devices ignore the other.

--------

The approved method for my Resound hearing aids is to use an additional hardware device called TV streamer. An extra speaker cord sends the TV output to the Streamer. The Hearing Aids are paired directly with the Streamer, and broadcast directly to the Hearing Aids ONLY when I selected Hearing Aid Program 5, TV/MicroMult on My iPhone Hearing Aid App, 'Smart 3D'. at all other times, the streamer Bluetooth is ignored. (The other programs are: 1 All around, 2 Hear in Noise, 3 Outdoor, 4 Music.

The Hearing Aids remains paired to the iPhone app at the same time, so if I send a text, is still get keyboard clicks as I type. As I sit in front of to the TV, I get the TV directly, mixed with the sound from the TV streamer in my ears.

I find the Streamer Audio quality FAR better than the TV speaker. The streamer reproduces very nicely the parts of the spectrum that the TV speaker just muffles.
