How do I have iCloud save my gmail?

I've been using a gmail account for a very long time. I also have iCloud+. How can I get iCloud to save my gmail emails. I don't want to switch over to using my icloud email account because I'd have to contact a lot of people about my switch.

iPhone 12 Pro, iOS 18

Best Ways to Save Gmail Emails to iCloud

Option 1: Use the Apple Mail App with Both Accounts

This is the simplest way to have Gmail emails live inside your iCloud ecosystem — without changing your address.

Here's How:

  1. On your Mac, open the Mail app.
  2. Go to Mail > Settings > Accounts > + to add your Gmail account.
  3. Also ensure your iCloud Mail is active (same screen).
  4. Once Gmail is added:
    • You can drag any email or folder from Gmail into your iCloud inbox or folders.
    • This copies the emails to iCloud’s servers, under your Apple ID.
This works exactly like migrating data — your Gmail stays intact, and you now have a backup in iCloud Mail.

Option 2: Use Rules to Auto-Forward from Gmail to iCloud

If you want Gmail to automatically forward new messages to iCloud Mail (for redundancy):

Steps:

  1. Log in to Gmail.com
  2. Go to Settings (⚙️) > See All Settings > Forwarding and POP/IMAP
  3. Click Add a forwarding address, and enter your iCloud email
  4. Google will send a confirmation code to iCloud Mail — enter it back into Gmail
  5. Once confirmed, choose to forward all mail or create a filter for selected types (e.g., only archive-worthy ones)
This does not delete Gmail copies, just sends a duplicate to iCloud.

Option 3: One-Time Gmail Backup into iCloud (via Mac Mail)

If you want to bulk move old Gmail emails to iCloud for storage:

  1. Open the Mail app on Mac
  2. Add your Gmail and iCloud accounts
  3. Wait for Gmail to fully sync (this may take a while if you have lots of messages)
  4. Select messages or folders from Gmail, then drag them into an iCloud Mail folder on the sidebar
This gives you a one-time archival of older Gmail emails inside iCloud.
