when I open my email on my phone it shows my most recent email, but when opened on my Mac its shows only emails from a couple months ago. they don't show the same thing so when I try to email on my Mac I have to go into the browser and can't use the app and its a bother.

Ensure your mail account is online. If there is lightning symbol beside your inbox then it could be offline.
On your Mac in Apple Mail, in the top menu bar, click on Mailbox, Take all Accounts Offline. Then go there again and click on Take all Accounts Online.
Click on Get Mail.
Try sending an email message to yourself to see if it arrives on both devices.
Make sure the email account and the email clients on every device accessing the account are configured IMAP.
