iMac won't recognise TV connected by HDMI

I have been trying to connect a TV as a lyrics screen through my iMac 2021. The iMac will not recognise the connected TV, even after trying multiple ports in both the iMac and the TV. The iMac won't recognise the TV by bluetooth either. The USB C to HDMI connectors are brand new, and the HDMI cord is of good quality.

Is there a setting or something else that I need to change in order for the iMac to recognise the HDMI port connection?

Hi,

If your iMac isn't recognizing a TV connected via HDMI, it's likely due to a connection issue or a problem with your display settings. First, ensure the HDMI cable is securely connected to both the iMac and the TV, and try a different cable to rule out damage. If that doesn't work, restart both devices and check your TV's input settings to make sure it's on the correct HDMI channel. Finally, adjust your iMac's display settings by going to System Settings > Displays and selecting "Detect Displays" while holding down the Option key.

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. 1. Check the Physical Connection:
    • Inspect the HDMI cable: Look for any visible damage or loose connections. Try a different HDMI cable to eliminate the cable as a potential issue.
    • Secure connections: Ensure the cable is firmly plugged into both the iMac and the TV's HDMI ports.
    • Try different ports: If your TV has multiple HDMI ports, try switching to a different one.
  1. 2. Restart Devices:
    • Power cycle: Turn off both the iMac and the TV. Unplug them from the power source for a few minutes, then plug them back in and turn them on.
  1. 3. Adjust Display Settings:
    • Check TV input: Make sure your TV is set to the correct HDMI input channel that corresponds to the port you're using.
    • Detect Displays: On your iMac, go to System Settings > Displays. Hold down the Option key to reveal the "Detect Displays" button, then click it. This forces your iMac to rescan for connected displays.
  1. 4. Troubleshoot with Adapters:
    • Check adapter: If you're using a USB-C to HDMI adapter, ensure it's compatible with your iMac and TV, and that it's securely connected.
    • Try a different adapter: If you have another adapter, try using it to see if the issue is with the adapter itself.
  1. 5. Advanced Troubleshooting:
    • Check Mac specifications: If you're still having trouble, consult your iMac's tech specs to confirm it supports the resolution and refresh rate of your TV, according to Apple Support
    • Sleep/Wake: Put your iMac to sleep and then wake it up. Sometimes this can resolve display connection issues.
    • Third-party display: If you're using a third-party display, check its manual for specific connection instructions.

By systematically checking these potential issues, you should be able to resolve the HDMI connection problem between your iMac and TV. If the problem persists, it could indicate a hardware issue, and you may need to seek professional help from Apple Support or a qualified technician.
