Tried to download macOS Sierra 3 times but the thing doesn’t work

Whenever I download MacOS Sierra I keep seeing the progress bar jumping so I thought, oh, wow , so fast… until the thing shows ‘about -399 seconds remaining’ and then they show an error message… HELP!

Earlier Mac models

Use Fix #3 to bypass that old <sigh> error:

Basically copy paste & edit this to the Terminal when you are in Internet Recovery mode (I have not tried but maybe you can paste it when you are logged in normally. After successful install reset PRAM to return to the default):

nvram IASUCatalogURL="http://swscan.apple.com/content/catalogs/others/index-10.13-10.12-10.11-10.10-10.9-mountainlion-lion-snowleopard-leopard.merged-1.sucatalog"

MacOS Sierra 10.12, thanks.

I am trying to download by downloading on web browser. Long story cut short, here’s what I did:

  • downloaded lion( default OS)
  • went onto Safari and downloaded Google
  • Downloaded Sierra from official page Apple
  • got into the recovery page for MaOS sierra.
  • cleaned my hard drive
  • opened Reinstall and done all the thing
  • the thing that I stated happened.

I found at my MacBook Pro was a late 2011 MacBook Pro now I am on high Sierra and is trying to upgrade to Catalina so ye thank

Notice that if that Mac has HDD it will be quite slow because Mojave and later need APFS which is quite slow with a HDD boot disk. So for Catalina you might want to use an internal/external SSD.

Or use High Sierra with that old HDD which can still use MacOS Extended. But then you have quite limited web browser support.

I tried to paste that nvram command to the Terminal when booted normally but it produced an error, so that nvram command must be copied from the Installer Log and edited when booted in Recovery mode.
