why is airport extreme no setting up

I purchase a NEW Airport Extreme, still in original box, that has never been opened before. I plug it in, according to directions, and the flashing orange light comes on but never goes to green. This is the same condition as the previous one. I have attempted to access it but it never comes up to be selected though a network shows it DIMMED so inaccessable.

Is this just another bad unit or?????

Just FYI … it’s only “New to You”

They haven’t been produced in quite some time.

And electronics - especially power supply capacitors - don’t necessarily age well w/ non-use — and the newest production units are now abt seven years old.

That said, it won’t “go green” w/o internet connectivity.

Did you also reboot the upstream device thru which it’s accessing the internet ? (e.g. Cable Modem, FTTH ONT, etc.)

I purchase a NEW Airport Extreme

What model number of AirPort Extreme is this? This is extremely important, otherwise we are playing a guessing game.

I plug it in

Plug the AirPort Extreme into what? A modem? Another router? We need the make and model number of the device to which the AirPort will connect.

according to directions, and the flashing orange light comes on

This is normal and expected.

but never goes to green

It will never display a green light until you use AirPort Utility to configure the AirPort Extreme with the correct settings. Even if the settings are correct, the AirPort will need firmware updates.

This is the same condition as the previous one. I have attempted to access it but it never comes up to be selected though a network shows it DIMMED so inaccessable.

Then, you did not configure the AirPort correctly. Will you be using a Mac to set up the AirPort Extreme? What operating system is the Mac using?

Tks to all who answered and forgive me for not adding in the part above about the only machine I have that will actually handle the setup. From what I gather there is a disparity between the Airport Utility and Airport Extreme on newer machines; i.e. 16bit to 32bit or 64bit just will not work.

That is why we were asking for the actual model number of the AirPort Extreme. There were 5 different versions and the version that you received may have required a version of AirPort Utility that was used when Macs were running Leopard, Snow Leopard, Lion, etc.

After 43 years in the electronics industry you should know that an appeal to authority is always a losing proposition - especially when the authority you are appealing to is yourself. Heh.

And that troubleshooting has to start with the basics, because sometimes it really is as simple as turning it off and on again...not to mention that even experienced people can forget the basics by mistake.

I will answer both of you in this one.

  1. I spent 43 years in the electronics industry which include all types of radio communications from CW to Satellite. enoush said.
  2. NEW!!! while IT IS NOT NEW TO ME by type, it was a NEW UNIT still in its original cellophane. this was spelled out originally.
  3. What ever in Utilities, but nothing I could do would ALLOW ME TO ACCESS it. The green light was supposed to come on to indicate it was connected to my computer, which it will not do. I am unable to confiture it because I cannot access it.

I just found out how to get into another Airport Utility on the 10.11 machine. The Big Sur and 15.5 machines will only tell me that OLD equipment is not usable on this machine.

Had to open utility and click on manual THEN shift to the extreme to do the setup.

have green steady so will move this to its extender position.
