Troubleshooting Lost Photos and Videos:

Loss of data is something you would have agreed to upon opening an Apple Account. So, if the following does not work, then they are gone. That's just the way it is :(

Five Tactics to Try:

A. Start here: If you're Missing Photos or Videos in the Photos app - Apple Support

B. Check Recently Deleted:

Starting in iOS16Recently Deleted is a location to tap in the Photos app to recover these.

C. Check iCloud, Directly:

For Photos: Go here, and see if they reside in iCloudhttps://www.icloud.com/photos

D. Restore your iPhone from a Backup:

Have any backups of this iPhone prior to this occurrence? If so, restore your iPhone from one that has these photos (the most recent backup, ideally). If not, then take this as a learning experience, knowing to always back up your device for recovery purposes. Important: Back up you iPhone prior to performing this restoration, should anything go wrong from here on out.

E. Where Else to Check:

  1. PC
  2. PDA
  3. eMail
  4. Mac Device
  5. Cloud Storage
  6. Android Phone
  7. USB Flash Drive
  8. External Hard drive
  9. Secure Digital Card
  10. Compact Flash Card

It would be best not to encourage a misunderstanding of iCloud Backup.

When you have iCloud Photos enabled, your photos do not also take space in iCloud Backups. When you have iCloud Photos disabled, your photos do take space in iCloud Backups. You are not saving any iCloud space, or any money, by using iCloud Backups that include photos in the place of iCloud Photos.

Now if you tell the phone that it should not use iCloud Photos, and should not include photos in iCloud Backups, you can avoid paying for iCloud space to safeguard your photos. That also means that unless you make another arrangement (like manually importing photos to a computer on a regular basis), you are keeping your photos in a single basket, and that if anything should happen, you will lose them all.

You can see this:

If you're missing photos or videos in the Photos app - Apple Support

Basically the above says to look in Recently Deleted and in Hidden. Be sure to check your Library thoroughly-- the pictures may not be where you expect, as dates may have changed. You can use the search field with the date or location. And remember, you can sort the Library by date captured or by date added. Also, your Library view now has filters, and you may not have your filter set to "All Items:"

If you don't use iCloud Photos, but you have Settings>Apple ID>iCloud Backup turned on, then you may be able to recover data from the last 30 days or so at iCloud.com, but you would need to look at the date of the backup to be sure it's from before you lost the images. You should look here:

View and manage iCloud device backups - Apple Support

This requires you to erase everything on your phone and replace it with the backup.

If you don't keep your own backups to an external drive, then there really isn't any place else to look.

I'm afraid that iCloud Photos wouldn't "prevent this from happening in the future." iCloud Photos is a synchronization service, not a backup service. While it's true that pictures taken on a phone are copied to iCloud.com, mistakes are synchronized, too. So accidentally deleting pictures on a phone deletes them at iCloud.com at nearly the same time.

There is an iCloud Backup service which backs up an iPhone. If iCloud Photos is not used, then iCloud Backup will backup Photos' pictures. Restoring from iCloud requires you to erase everything on your phone and replace it with the backup.

There's some confusing stuff there. Perhaps you'd like to start a new thread.

I think you said

iCloud backup includes pictures unless you also have iCloud Photos turned on. So turning on iCloud Photos is not required to backup your pictures.

That's correct. And,

if you have iCloud Photos turned on, you still need to use iCloud Backup to protect all your other stuff.

What do you mean by "lose"? Did your iPhone 6s get lost or crashed or what?

You need to be more specific. Please describe exactly what happened in detail. That way when we make a suggestion we're not guessing wildly.

It would be likely to prevent it in the case the OP mentioned – where the phone got lost. If your phone is lost or stolen, but it's locked, the fact of losing it alone will not cause delete requests to be sent to iCloud. If your device and Apple Account were secure, any photos that the phone had synchronized to iCloud would be in iCloud, and could be viewed via the Web interface even before you had replaced the lost phone.

Requests to delete photos are different – as you say, those are synchronized everywhere.

Ahh, I interpreted "get lose please can I get them back" to mean that the pictures were lost, not the phone. But, of course, if the entire phone is lost, stolen, or run over by a truck, then the owner would more likely benefit from a full backup, not just their pictures. A full phone backup is provided by iCloud Backup (Settings>Apple ID>iCloud Backup,) not by iCloud Photos.

iCloud Photos is an additional service that provides synchronization. People who don't want or need to synchronizes their devices don't need to pay for it to get backup- it doesn't do that, and it's best to not encourage a misunderstanding of the nature of iCloud Photos.
