Those 27" iMac's came with a Fusion Drive (a small SSD and a HDD) or they could be configured with an SSD.

You will need to call and check with your local AASP to see if they do SSD upgrades on that year model.

Instead of paying for an expensive internal upgrade, you can startup and run from an external SSD.

If the internal drive is not actually failing and throwing errors, you will have no problem finding fast, compatible external ones.

Your Mac’s USB-C / Thunderbolt ports can support USB 3.1 Gen 2 / NVMe SSDs, or even faster Thunderbolt 3 ones. Any of its USB-A or USB-C ports would be fast enough for slower USB 3 / SATA SSDs. (Even those might well be faster, overall, than a Fusion Drive.)

The question is not whether you can get good external drives but whether your current issues are ones that an external SSD could address.

Why not use a TB drive connected to one of your TB ports. The other USB ports are 5gb/s and too slow. However, if you want to save cost then use an NVME drive like a WD Black series in a USB 3.2 gen 2 case. You can also get one all ready to go like this one:

In a very short time (this fall) Apple will be releasing the next version of Mac OS V26 known as Tahoe. That version will only run on 2020 and later iMacs. What that means to you is your machine has reached the end of the road and spending money on it is like throwing money into a burning fire, a total waste.

If the machine is okay, continue using it until it no longer works or for another 2-3 years and then retire it but don’t spend a nickel upgrading hardware on it.

However if you must get a SSD, follow den.theds advice and get yourself an external SSD. Also, ' No Apple will not do aSSD upgrade for you.

 Thank you for that info.

My computer can’t handle Logic Pro and Final Cut which I use everyday.

Do you think it will with a good external ssd hard drive running the osx and everything ?

or do you need to know more about the computer to know this.

sometimes my computer will run well for a short while and then go slow and stay slow,

so its probably the old 6 year old Fusion Drive and nothing else right.

If you can advise on the above question it would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Jon
