Accessing external drive on 2nd Mac via file sharing “original item … not found“

Dear community,

A MacBook Air is connected to a Studio Mac via Network, contents of its internal drive are accessible. The MBAir has a flash drive connected to it, file sharing active, flash drive shared, the Studio Mac, file sharing equally active, the flash drive appears as one of the drives of that MBAir, but when trying to open it, I get: The operation can’t be completed because the original item for “[flash drive name]” can’t be found (although it certainly and demonstrably is connected and User permissions are set correctly). Any idea? Thanks!

Mac Studio, macOS 15.5

Re-share the flash drive after plugging it in

  1. On the MacBook Air, eject the flash drive.
  2. Quit System Settings (File Sharing pane gets weird if it’s open too long).
  3. Plug the flash drive back in.
  4. Go to System Settings > General > Sharing > File Sharing.
  5. Click the + and re-add the flash drive to the list of shared folders.
  6. Ensure the correct user has Read & Write permissions.
