More questions on playing older mp4 files on Apple Music for Windows

While I am aware that mp4 and older music file formats will not play on Apple Music for Windows (Windows 11 in this case) due to DRM issues, I'm confused as to why they will play on iTunes. I can't use iTunes to synch with my iPhone SE (it just doesn't "see" devices anymore) but why is one Apple program okay with those files and another not?

So, is there another way to synch and listen to all my old mp3 (which were converted to mp4s by iTunes at some point in time in the past that I don't remember) files that I ripped off CDs back in the day?

All programs are fully updated, drivers updated, cables good, etc.

iPhone SE, iOS 18

If you install any of Apple Music, Apple TV, or Apple Devices then iTunes is hobbled such that it only manages audiobooks and podcasts. Device management functions are suppressed.

DRM protected files stored on your computer can generally only be played by the app that downloaded them. If you remove DRM tracks from the library without deleting the files, then try to add them back to the library then they will be rejected. You must redownload from your purchase history.

There was an issue in the early days of the Apple Music service where tracks matched or uploaded from one computer might be downloaded with DRM at another computer, unless you also paid separately for the iTunes Match service. That has long since changed, but if you were an early subscriber you could potentially have been caught unawares by this issue.

Thank you for the ideas to work on, muguy and turingtest2, and my apologies for the very late replies.

You are correct, muguy, I mistyped and should have said they were m4a files. The differing file formats confuse me considerably.

Turingtest2 - I installed Apple Music and Apple Devices because iTunes began to cause difficulties with my iPhone SE. It bricked the phone twice trying to install iOS updated on the phone, then Apple recommended I use Apple Music and Devices. Would it help if I uninstall those programs and try to return to iTunes (if that is even possible)?
