Screen Recording Lag - High GPU Usage on MacBook Pro 2017 (Intel)

Hi all, I’ve been experiencing significant lag when doing screen recording on my MacBook Pro 2017 (Intel).

I checked Activity Monitor, and I noticed that the screencapture process alone is using 35% GPU, while WindowServer is also consistently high (~15%). Plus, VTEncoderXPCService (likely related to video encoding) also eats up to 40% GPU.

Specs:

  • MacBook Pro 2017 (Intel)
  • macOS Ventura
  • Activity: Screen recording only, no heavy apps running

Is it normal for screencapture to take that much GPU on Intel Macs? Or is there any optimization I can apply to reduce the lag?

Any advice or recommended setup would be appreciated. Thanks!

I've tried it even when the storage is still empty, it still lags

As I mentioned, this may not be my place, but do have a duty to drill down further from your report

From that same report

Battery failure - Your battery is reporting that it needs to be serviced.

Battery: Health = Service Battery - Cycle count = 501

Batteries do fail even at 501 Full Battery Cycles

As @BDAqua has suggested

These figures bare out the computer can Read from the Internal Drive but is struggling to Write to the Internal Drive

Write speed: 482 MB/s

Read speed: 1466 MB/s

Another point of concern

System Integrity Protection: Disabled

It is ok to disable SIP for specific one time needs

But running with SIP Disabled all the time is really not recommended

In addition to all the good advice you have already had:

You not only have a very small drive, but have even partitioned it into three parts, so your system partition is below 90 GB, and with only some 12 GB free.

Shame on Apple for selling Macs with these puny drives for as long as it did, but you are not doing yourself any favor by cutting off 30 GB of that already tiny drive...

In addition, I see that you have the google updater software, which is known to conflict with the system videotoolbox.
